AFEC International have been appointed by the Department of Education to reorder, convert and extend a former Fire Station as a new primary school. The complexities of working within an existing building which is a Protected Structure and has been vacant for many years, demand a high level of project management. As Design Team Lead, AFEC are coordinating the detail design and construction stages of the project, including conservation elements. The existing building, a red brick fronted two storey L-shaped block with pedimented central entrance dates from the end of the nineteenth century. Along with works to this building, including energy upgrades and historic fabric repair, a new 3-storey extension will be added. The new materials are restrained and contemporary – white brick and mortar, timber cladding and glass – and will complement the Protected Structure.
