The refurbishment and upgrade of this live hyperscale data centre facility in mainland Europe involved the enhancement of existing mission-critical infrastructure to support evolving high-density compute and AI-driven operational requirements within a fully operational environment. The project required the careful integration of new and existing systems while maintaining uninterrupted service continuity and operational resilience throughout all phases of delivery.
AFEC International acted as Design Team Lead, providing full mechanical, electrical, and public health engineering services, including infrastructure assessments, HV and LV single-line diagram rationalisation, BIM coordination, permitting support, and detailed design development for a design-and-build procurement strategy.
The engineering scope focused on increasing system resilience, cooling capacity, and power distribution capability to accommodate higher rack densities and next-generation compute environments. Works included upgrades to chilled water and precision cooling systems, optimisation of critical power distribution architecture, switchgear integration, UPS and standby power coordination, and phased live-environment infrastructure replacements. Extensive BIM modelling and multidisciplinary coordination were utilised to manage spatial constraints, live interfaces, and phased implementation within a highly serviced operational facility.
Delivered through ongoing technical oversight, construction-stage coordination, and regular site inspections, the project demonstrates AFEC’s capability to successfully deliver complex live data centre upgrade and refurbishment projects through integrated engineering design, mission-critical coordination, and carefully phased infrastructure delivery.
