This multi-region retrofit programme involved the upgrade of live hyperscale and colocation data centre facilities to support increasing AI and machine learning capacity requirements. Delivered within fully operational mission-critical environments, the programme required carefully managed infrastructure upgrades across facilities ranging from 5MW to 40MW, with a strong emphasis on resilience, operational continuity and phased construction delivery.
Acting as lead multidisciplinary consultant on the client side, the scope included technical leadership for power, cooling and spatial reconfiguration works, alongside coordination between operations teams, contractors and OEM vendors throughout both design and construction stages. The programme also involved management of permits, statutory approvals, compliance processes and live-site interface controls to ensure retrofit works could progress safely within active facilities.
Working within highly constrained operational environments, the retrofit strategy was developed to enable infrastructure modernisation with zero unplanned outages, maintaining continuous service across critical AI and ML operations while supporting accelerated programme delivery.
This project demonstrates AFEC’s capability to deliver complex live-site retrofit programmes for hyperscale digital infrastructure, combining multidisciplinary coordination, resilience-focused engineering and controlled phased delivery across operational mission-critical facilities.
